Parenting Support
This part of the core offer focuses on delivering parenting initiatives in any form that parents/schools identify as needed in the Partnership area.
Examples of Parenting Support:
- Developing play
- Communicating with your child
- Helping your child to learn
- Parenting Support with Behavioural issues
There are a number of professional organisations that are active in the area that the Partnership will link up with to provide this support:
- Family Link
- Parenting Initiatives
- health visitors
- school health advisor
Northumberland County Council has also been selected to take part in a pilot based around Parenting Support. The Northumberland Parenting Support pilot involves parents being able to access a full-time Parent Worker who works across the Partnership Schools and can offer parents information, advice or just a 'listening ear'. Kate Whitehead the Ponteland Partnerships Parent Worker works across all the Ponteland schools offering Parents courses and groupwork, individual support to parents, and Family Learning activities.
Parenting groupwork allows parents to share experiences and support each other whilst learning new skills and strategies. Groupwork is
provided through more informal parent groups such as support groups. Courses and workshops offered since January 2007 include:
- Step by Step
- SATs SOS
- Understanding Teenagers
- Speakeasy, talking to your child about growing up
- Sibling Rivalry
- Boys
- Helping your children learn
- Drugs Awareness
- Triple P
- Smooth Moves
We also now have an S.E.N parents' group, for parents of pre-school and first school children with special educational needs. This group meets once every half-term.
Individual support for parents normally consists of one-to-one meetings between our Parents' Worker and the parents, and is based on the changes the parents would like to see in their family. Parents themselves can contact Kate using the details below, if they feel they would like some support on a range of issues, such as:
- Children's Behaviour
- Brother & Sister relationships
- Helping your child fit in at a new school
- Helping your child deal with peer pressure
- Confidence in being a parent
Alternatively you can ask your child's school if you would like some parenting support.

Parenting support is available for anyone who is a parent and who would like to share ideas and experiences with other parents. Every child is different and as a parent you are the 'expert' on your child. What parenting support can offer is a chance for you to pick up some new ideas to help you continue bringing up a happy, healthy child. |
Family Learning
Adult Education is already well established in the Ponteland partnership area with successful courses being run from Ponteland Community High School. (Link to adult education) However, the opportunities for adults and young people learning together are limited. The Partnership hopes to rectify this situation and has begun to implement a series of events to encourage families to learn together.
